When you've got a bazillion relatives, let alone friends to keep updated, emailing them all is a touch difficult.Plus some don't want to see a big long group email, others you might have updated on skype. So in the interests of self service - I now present you aboyindoha's blog.
Everything is still a little surreal, but the things which stand out about Doha.
- The country I come from is meant to be multicultural. It's got nothing on this place. It's so multi cultural it makes the spaceport scenes of Star Wars look like boring. You name the country and subculture and it's here.
- There's a massive building boom. There was an article recently suggesting the number of cranes can be linked to the chance of recession. Well if that's the case, this place is headed for the great depression. I think not however.
- There's a huge effort to hire locals in positions of responsibility. That said, there are supposedly 200000 Qataris and 1.8 million people in the country - they need migrants to do work.
- Yes, it's religiously conservative, but I can't say I notice it - mostly (See next point). What was once unusual is now usual.
- I'm no massive drinker, but there's been a day or two after work when I'd have killed for a beer.
- Patience. Patience, patience. I need more, but when you wait 2 weeks for something trivial done in 2 minutes, there's clearly an issue somewhere.
